St. John's Mission

The family of Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church is called and empowered by God to spread the Gospel and share the love of Jesus Christ through Service to All

Thoughts
" It was not on tales artfully spun that we relied when we told you of the power of our Lord Jesus Christ and his coming; we saw him with our own eyes in majesty, when at the hands of God the Father he was invested with honour and glory, and there came to him from the sublime presence a voice which said: 'This is my Son, my Beloved, on whom my favor rests.'  This voice from heaven we ourselves heard; when it came, we were with him on the sacred mountain."
2 Peter 1: 16-19

"Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ"    Romans 10:17

"God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds, and stars." Martin Luther

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Here is a list of Outreach activities that St. John's offers not only to members of our congregation
but also to anyone that is looking to participate in a community service activity or wants fellowship time with some
wonderfully gifted people.
Come join the fun and meet people that could become friends for life. These people give of themselves,
their talents, their time and welcome those who would like to share in God's work of  giving to others.
If there are other Outreach activities not mentioned you would like for St. John's to consider, just
let us know and we will certainly see what can be done to add them to the things we do in service to the community.

Bereavement Meals – Margaret Pennington is the coordinator of this committee and Fran Smith is the Group Leader.  Depending on what the family of the deceased wants, St. John’s volunteers prepares either a sit down meal or light refreshments for the family and friends.  This is always done beautifully with respect and consideration by everyone involved with this committee.

Chefs I & II – Carolyn Brandt is the coordinator, Chefs I Team Leader is Judy Nelson and Chefs II-  Team Leader is Carol Holt   This program truly speaks  volumes  about the volunteers working in these groups.  They give of their time, talent and money to provide a good nutritional meal for congregational shut-ins and new mothers-to-be.  Chefs I does this on the 1st  Thursday of the Month and Chefs II does it on the 3rd  Thursday of the month.

Christmas Eve Meals – This ministry is one that truly gets the message out to the shut-ins and people in our community, who would probably not have a Christmas meal otherwise, that God is alive and well and working through members of St. John’s.  Meals are prepared by volunteers and delivered by volunteers with joy in their hearts and a smile of their face.  This program is coordinated by Ann Brackett and Mike & Mary Hill.

Global Missions – This is a wonderful program whereby you can give “Gifts of Hope” to worthwhile causes by making a donation in the name of a loved one rather than putting a present under the Christmas tree.  It also encompasses gifts to the ELCA World Hunger Mission which is ongoing at St. John’s.  This project is coordinated by Dottie Brandt and Sara Wyatt.

Issaqueena Bike Ride – St. John’s partners with the bike riders to raise awareness and donations for the Crisis Prevention Center in Anderson and other counties as well as for Foothills Alliance.  Volunteers from the congregation provide refreshments for the riders and it is a great time to interact with members of the community.  A good time is had by all.

Knitters & Crocheters – Barbara Wilson is the coordinator for this wonderful group of ladies that give so much of their time and talent for so many worthy causes.  They send leprosy bandages to missionaries and Lutheran agencies.  They make baby sweaters for layettes for WELCA.  They donate handmade items to the DSS for gifts to needy children at Christmas time.  They make blankets for hurricane victims and donate dishcloths to Camp Kinard and Isle of Palms Conference Centers.  They also sell their handmade items to raise money that is then donated to projects going on within the church.  They continue to be good stewards by helping those in our community, state, nation and the world.

Showers – St. John’s acknowledges new births in our congregation by hosting a baby shower for the new mother-to-be.  Refreshments are provided and gift opening is accompanied by fellowship.  This provides a good time for congregational members to get to know each other better.  Fran Smith coordinates this function .

Transportation Committee -

Wednesday Lunch  - Margaret Pennington is the coordinator of this group.  They meet twice a month on the same day as the knitters and crocheters.  It is a time for sharing good food and good fellowship.  This activity is not exclusive to the congregation.  Non-members are also welcome to come and enjoy our wonderful church .
